6 Days Marangu Route | Mount Kilimanjaro Climb

Reach the roof of Africa on our 6 Day Marangu Route, one of the most popular and comfortable ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). Known as the famous Coca-Cola Route, this itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak while allowing your body more time to adjust to the altitude.

Unlike the camping routes, the Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro trail that offers comfortable mountain huts with beds, mattresses, solar lighting, and shared dining areas. It’s an excellent choice for first-time trekkers, couples, families with older children, and anyone who prefers sleeping indoors instead of in tents.

Led by experienced local mountain guides, you’ll hike through lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the snow-covered summit zone before standing at Africa’s highest point. Why Choose the 6 Day Marangu Route?

The 6 Day Marangu Route is one of the best options for climbers looking for a balance of comfort, affordability, and a higher chance of reaching the summit. While the Marangu Route can be completed in five days, adding an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut significantly improves your body’s ability to adapt to the altitude, increasing the likelihood of a successful summit.

Often referred to as the Coca-Cola Route, Marangu is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route where climbers stay in permanent mountain huts instead of tents, making it an attractive choice during the rainy season or for those who prefer more sheltered accommodation.

Why Climbers Love This Route

Comfortable Mountain Huts

Sleep in shared huts equipped with beds and mattresses, eliminating the need for camping while providing protection from the mountain’s changing weather.

Better Acclimatization

The additional acclimatization day allows your body to adjust gradually to the increasing altitude, helping reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and improving summit success.

Diverse Landscapes

In just six days, you’ll experience four distinct ecological zones:

  • Dense tropical rainforest

  • Heath and moorland

  • Alpine desert

  • Arctic summit zone

Each zone offers unique scenery, wildlife, and photographic opportunities.

Professional Mountain Team

Every climb is led by experienced, licensed guides and supported by skilled porters and mountain cooks. Daily health checks, safety briefings, and careful pace management help ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.

Excellent Value

The Marangu Route offers one of the most cost-effective ways to climb Kilimanjaro while still providing comfortable accommodation and a well-established trail.

Ideal for First-Time Climbers

If you’re climbing Kilimanjaro for the first time and want hut accommodation with an extra day to acclimatize, this route is an excellent choice. While no route guarantees reaching the summit, the six-day itinerary offers a better balance between challenge and acclimatization than the shorter five-day option.

Itinerary In Details

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Route Information

  • Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 1,860 m (6,100 ft)
  • Ending Elevation: 2,700 m (8,858 ft)
  • Habitat: Rainforest Zone
  • Accommodation: Mandara Hut

Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins after breakfast with a transfer from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate, the official starting point of the Marangu Route. After completing registration procedures and meeting your mountain crew, your experienced Kilimanjaro guide will provide a safety briefing before you begin your first day of trekking.

The trail starts through the beautiful lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, entering the lush tropical rainforest that surrounds the mountain. This section of the route is known for its green vegetation, towering trees, moss-covered landscapes, and the peaceful atmosphere of the forest.

As you hike through the rainforest, keep your eyes open for some of Kilimanjaro’s unique wildlife, including blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Your guide will share information about the mountain’s ecosystem, local culture, and the plants found within this fascinating environment.

The first day is considered a gentle introduction to the climb. The steady uphill trail allows your body to begin adapting to the increasing altitude while giving you time to enjoy the scenery. Remember that Kilimanjaro is not a race—the recommended pace is “pole pole” (slowly slowly), allowing proper acclimatization and conserving energy for the days ahead.

After approximately four hours of hiking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, your first mountain camp. The wooden A-frame huts provide comfortable shared accommodation with beds and dining facilities. After settling in, you can relax, enjoy a freshly prepared meal from your mountain chef, and spend the evening surrounded by the peaceful rainforest environment.

Your guide will also check on your health, discuss the next day’s trek, and ensure you are comfortable before your first night on Mount Kilimanjaro.

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, your Kilimanjaro trek continues as you leave the rainforest behind and begin ascending into the beautiful heath and moorland zone. This section of the Marangu Route offers dramatic changes in scenery as the dense forest gives way to open landscapes with giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and wide views across the mountain.

The trail begins with a short hike to Maundi Crater, one of the highlights of this section. From here, on a clear day, you can enjoy impressive views of the surrounding landscapes and even see the distant plains of northern Tanzania.

As you continue toward Horombo Hut, the vegetation gradually becomes shorter and more adapted to the high-altitude environment. Your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace to help your body adjust to the increasing elevation. This gradual approach is an important part of successful Kilimanjaro acclimatization.

Throughout the day, you will begin to experience the unique beauty of Kilimanjaro’s higher ecosystems. The trail provides excellent views of the impressive Mawenzi Peak and, depending on weather conditions, your first views of Kibo Peak, the summit area you will eventually climb.

After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Horombo Hut, one of the largest mountain camps on Kilimanjaro. Located at 3,720 meters, Horombo offers spectacular views and serves as an important resting point for climbers on the Marangu Route.

In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner and relax at the camp while your mountain crew monitors your progress and prepares you for the upcoming acclimatization day.

Today is an important acclimatization day designed to help your body adjust to the high altitude before continuing toward the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Unlike the shorter 5-day Marangu Route, this extra day allows for a more gradual ascent and improves your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will take a short acclimatization hike with your guide. The purpose of today’s trek is not to cover a large distance but to allow your body to experience a higher altitude before returning to sleep at the lower elevation of Horombo Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach is one of the most effective methods for adapting to altitude.

The hike usually takes you toward the Mawenzi side of the mountain, offering incredible views of Mawenzi Peak, Kibo Peak, and the surrounding alpine landscape. Along the way, your guide will explain Kilimanjaro’s geology, wildlife, plants, and the challenges of high-altitude trekking.

During the afternoon, you will return to Horombo Hut to rest, enjoy meals prepared by your mountain chef, and prepare your equipment for the next stage of the climb. Your guide will monitor your condition, check for signs of altitude sickness, and provide advice on hydration, nutrition, and maintaining a comfortable pace.

This extra acclimatization day is one of the main reasons many climbers choose the 6-Day Marangu Route over the 5-day option. Spending more time at altitude allows for better preparation before the demanding trek to Kibo Hut and the final summit attempt.

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert Zone
  • Accommodation: Kibo Hut

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin the next stage of your 6-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb. Today’s trek takes you away from the heath and moorland zone and into the dry, rugged alpine desert environment between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak.

The trail gradually climbs across the famous Saddle, a wide volcanic plateau that connects the two main volcanic peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. This landscape is completely different from the forests and vegetation you experienced earlier in the climb. The area is characterized by rocky terrain, sparse vegetation, and dramatic views of the mountain’s volcanic formations.

As you approach Kibo Hut, the pace becomes slower due to the increasing altitude. Your experienced mountain guide will maintain a steady rhythm, allowing your body to conserve energy and prepare for the upcoming summit attempt. Proper hydration, nutrition, and rest become increasingly important at this elevation.

During the trek, you will have impressive views of Kibo Peak, the summit cone of Kilimanjaro, where Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) is located. Reaching Kibo Hut marks the final resting point before the summit climb, and excitement builds as you prepare for the most challenging part of the journey.

Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will have lunch, rest, and receive a detailed briefing from your guide about the summit attempt. You will have an early dinner and go to sleep as early as possible because the summit climb begins around midnight.

The evening at Kibo Hut is often quiet and filled with anticipation as climbers prepare themselves mentally and physically for the final ascent to Africa’s highest point.

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your 6-Day Marangu Route climb as you make your final ascent to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and stand at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Your summit attempt begins around midnight after a light meal and final preparation. The climb starts in darkness, following a slow and steady pace under the stars. This section is physically demanding as you trek across volcanic scree toward Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim.

The pace is intentionally slow, allowing your body to manage the extreme altitude and conserving energy for the final section of the climb. Your experienced Kilimanjaro guide will support and encourage you throughout this demanding stage while monitoring your health and well-being.

After reaching Gilman’s Point, you continue along the crater rim toward Stella Point (5,739 m) before completing the final section to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Standing at the summit, you will experience unforgettable views across Tanzania and celebrate reaching the highest mountain in Africa. Take time to capture photographs, enjoy the achievement, and appreciate the incredible journey that brought you here.

After your summit celebration, you begin the descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Horombo Hut. Descending is physically demanding but usually feels easier as you return to lower elevations where the air becomes richer in oxygen.

Arriving at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, you will enjoy a well-earned dinner and a comfortable night’s rest after completing the summit challenge.

The descent takes you back through the beautiful heath and moorland area before re-entering the lush rainforest zone. The trail becomes greener as you lose altitude, offering a completely different perspective of Kilimanjaro compared with the higher, drier environments experienced during the ascent.

During the walk, your guide will share more insights about the mountain’s natural environment and the important role of conservation in protecting Mount Kilimanjaro for future generations. You may also have opportunities to spot some of the forest wildlife that inhabits the lower slopes.

Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you will complete the official check-out process and receive your well-earned Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Climbers who reach Gilman’s Point, Stella Point, or Uhuru Peak receive certificates recognizing their achievement.
