Explore the Wilderness of Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most beautifully unique safari destinations, known for its towering baobab trees, sweeping golden savannas, and the largest elephant herds in the country. Located in the Northern Circuit, just a short drive from Arusha, Tarangire offers a peaceful and less-crowded alternative to the busier parks — making it a favorite for photographers, nature lovers, and travelers seeking authentic, uncrowded game viewing.
The park’s landscapes transform dramatically with the seasons, creating a breathtaking wilderness that feels both serene and full of life.
Wildlife & Animals
Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive elephant populations, especially during the dry season when thousands gather around the Tarangire River — the park’s lifeline. This river attracts a wide range of animals, offering some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in northern Tanzania.
Visitors can expect to see:
Elephants in huge, impressive herds
Lions, leopards, and cheetahs
Zebras, wildebeests, and buffalo
Giraffes, warthogs, and baboons
The rare fringe-eared oryx and long-necked gerenuk
Tarangire is also home to one of Africa’s highest concentrations of breeding bird species and offers unique wildlife moments that often exceed expectations. The mix of baobab forests and open plains creates a perfect setting for unforgettable game drives.
Birds
With more than 550 recorded bird species, Tarangire is a paradise for avid and casual birdwatchers alike. The park’s varied habitats — wetlands, woodlands, river valleys, and savannas — support an extraordinary diversity of birdlife.
Notable bird species include:
Yellow-collared lovebird
Kori bustard
Lilac-breasted roller
Tawny eagle
Ostriches, hornbills, and various storks
Numerous migratory species during the wet season
The Silale Swamps are particularly rich in birdlife, attracting waders, raptors, and rare species throughout the year.
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Tarangire National Park is during the dry season (June to October), when animals gather in large numbers around the river and waterholes. Wildlife viewing is at its peak, and the landscape becomes open and ideal for photography.
During the wet season (November to May), the park transforms into a lush, green haven with vibrant vegetation and excellent birdwatching. Though some animals disperse into surrounding wilderness areas, the scenery is stunning and the park offers a quieter, more intimate safari experience.
