Overview

Mount Meru, Tanzania’s fifth-highest peak at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), offers a spectacular trekking experience in a less-crowded environment than Kilimanjaro. This 4-day trek is perfect for acclimatization, nature immersion, and wildlife spotting along the slopes.

Trekking Mount Meru takes you through lush rainforests, bamboo zones, montane forests, and volcanic landscapes, with opportunities to see wildlife such as elephants, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and abundant bird species. The adventure combines physical challenge with incredible scenery and expert guiding.

Itinerary In Details

Day 1: Arusha – Miriakamba Hut

Trailhead & Rainforest Trek

Depart from Arusha and drive to the Momella Gate, the starting point of the trek. Begin hiking through dense rainforest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and tropical birds.

Ascend gradually to the Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m), your first overnight stop. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay at the hut, preparing for higher altitude trekking the following day.

Waterfalls & Montane Forests

Continue the trek through montane forest and bamboo zones, passing the spectacular Ngare Ndare Waterfalls (optional detour). The terrain gradually becomes more open as you approach the saddle.

Reach Saddle Hut (3,550 m), located in a saddle between the main peak and the west peak of Mount Meru. Overnight stay prepares you for the summit push the next day.

Summit Push & Descend

Wake up early for the summit ascent, enjoying breathtaking views over the surrounding Arusha National Park, Kilimanjaro, and distant savannahs. Summit Mount Meru at 4,566 meters, then begin the descent back to Miriakamba Hut for overnight stay.

Distance & Duration: ~16 km, 8–10 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Overnight: Miriakamba Hut

Final Descent & Return to Arusha

Complete the final descent through rainforest trails back to the Momella Gate. Transfer by vehicle to Arusha for lunch and the conclusion of your trek.
